Connell Flyer 1

PLEASE NOTE: The following is a reproduction of a flyer printed in the 1980’s by the Connell family. It has been retyped and set into HTML code to allow for faster loading, and so the type and layout is slightly different from the original. Please be aware that this page is Copyright © 1998 by Pigs As Pets Association, Inc. and the text and photos are used by permission of Mrs. Keith Connell and are NOT to be reproduced. We are sorry that, because the flyer was folded for over ten years, some of the pictures show creases

DISPOSITION
Very gentle and friendly. They can be safely picked up at any age for tagging, worming, transferring, etc. They are not agressive and do not squeal like common pigs – very docile. Wag their straight tails and eat from your hand.

Grizabella

FEED and CARELike a common pig with 16% chow and hay. Temperature of 60-75° F. seems to please them. We worm them with Ivermectin and as their skin tends to dry, oil them with mineral oil.

Honey Bunny

APPEARANCE Usually very large pot-bellies that often drag the ground – the sows have pushed in faces with large jowls and a sway back – you could say ugly in an adorable way. Usually black but occasional one has white on feet and on nose.

ATTRACTIONNobody looks at them without smiling or walks away without photos. The piglets are always active and everytime the mother slows down they all dive and fight for the best teat. They have to be the best attraction ever placed in a children’s zoo as far as the ordinary visitor is concerned and will certainly pay for themselves in short order.

SIZE
Females grow from 80 – 90 pounds, males from 30 – 60 pounds. But you must be very careful and weigh out their feed or they will balloon in size.

Barbi and babies

BREEDINGIt would seem competition is an asset so we recommend 2 pairs at least. They breed at 5 – 7 months (or sooner) with gestation of 114 days from time sow will no longer accept boar. They have had 3 – 12 babies in a litter but usually some are born dead or die shortly after. We have averaged 6 piglets and they are ready to wean at 8 – 10 weeks.
